Where is good place for a family to vacation in Vermont?

Woodstock, VT, is a nice town, not far from ski areas, but the town itself has some nifty galleries and restaurants, some hiking (if there’s not too much snow), and a historic, working farm, which is a good family activity.

I can’t say if there are houses to rent around there–probably–but there are *lots* of B&Bs.

My favorite is Okemo Mountain near Ludlow Vermont. It’s a great place to ski, if you’re not “extreme” skiers. There are tons of houses for rent in the area around the mountain.

Smuggler’s Notch is another “family oriented” ski area. They have lots of condos on site with plenty of room for all of you.

Smuggler’s Notch has family-friendly activities and is within an hour of Burlington where there are many activities for both children and adults.

    7 adults, eh?

I’d say (I grew up there) the Manchester area is best. You have access to easier mountains (Bromely, maybe Magic Mtn), tougher mountains (Stratton, which is almost Vail-like), all within 20-ish minutes of each other. A little further up route 7 if you want to try Killington or Pico.

Basing in Manchester, though, is good for those who don’t want to ski. You can explore the outlet shops, the places like the Robert Todd Lincoln estate, the cute little shops and the Northshire bookstore. You can do a lot if you base in Manchester (it’s south-central Vermont). You won’t be disappointed.

In future trips, visit Burlington, VT (Lake Champlain, northeast) and definitely Stowe area (to the east). There are a few areas I don’t find quite as interesting, such as Springfield (central east, near the NH border) but many that are great.

I think you should start with Manchester. Outlet shopping, quaint shops, historical places, mountains within 20 minutes – can’t do better than that.
